If you know anything about the Coconut Grove Playhouse, you probably have some familiarity with its status as a major historical Miami landmark. The playhouse now finds itself involved in efforts to save, preserve, and restore the theater. The theater has remained dormant for over a decade as the debate continues on its future.

Coconut Grove Playhouse

The Coconut Grove Playhouse has been around since the late 1920s and it since it closed in 2006, there is no definitive vision of what the future holds for the theater. Miami-Dade County has former plans to restore the theater front while tearing down the larger auditorium to create a theater capable of seating up to 300 people. These plans are now in limbo because of the requirements necessary to maintain the theater’s historic preservation and remain on the list of National Register of Historic Places, which it has been a part of since last year. City officials would like to completely restore the theater.

The Coconut Grove Playhouse’s history is intriguingly rich. Aside from its gorgeous architecture, it became the first venue to host an American of the now-classic 1953 play Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett. In 1996, former television host David Letterman aired an episode of his successful Late Night with David Letterman show at the theater.
